BMW Concept 5 GT sketches

Click on images for larger size

BMW recently presented, to the press, the next Concept that will be at the Geneva Auto Show 2013: BMW Concept 5 series Gran Turismo.

What I really like of this presentation (other than its Design) is the good quality of the concept sketches. Here you have a good example, good proportions, good taste in color choices, good sketching abilities, good harmony between lines and volumes.

I hope that all design students look at these sketches to understand the media used and its application method, learn from them.

Car Design sketches

Mitsubishi project by Fabio Santamaria

Fabio Santamaria is a graduate from IED design school in Torino, Italy. His color sketch of Mitsubishi project is a good example of his strong ability and creativity.
Interesting design, good illustration technique.

Car sketch tutorial by Michal Uhrin

Dear friends
today, thanks to my friend Michal Uhrin, I will show you a real good tutorial to learn how to sketch and color a car. This tutorial is extremely well done by Michal who is finishing his Transportation Design Course at AFAD University of Art & Design in Bratislava SK. I had the pleasure to meet Michal the first time during a car design project sponsorized by the company I work for. I was managing the project and came across Michal who, at the time, was at his first year in school. When I saw his drawings I asked the school to give him permission to participate to the project. At the end of the experience Michal got an internship with us during which he learned a lot and today he is ready for a new one just before getting his final diploma in Transportation Design.
The demo is organized in 3 steps and each..click continue reading to see all images of this tutorial.

Car sketch by Miles Waterhouse

Miles Waterhouse has a great website in which he makes a lot of demos and sketching tutorials. The images of this color car sketch tutorial are just 2 of several others he published on his website,  all the necessary steps to correctly make a color car sketch can be seen at designcar website. Miles has a very simple and effective technique, all the steps are easy to understand, the basic rules of color sketching are respected as perspective, linework, focal point, warm and cool areas.

Simple rules to draw a car sketch in top view

Hi friends,
today I'll try to explane very quickly how we can draw a car in tip-up perspective or top view perspective. This time we will try to make it in 2 steps. Step 1: as you ca see from my preliminary drawing I tried to sketch a basic shape in perspective (the car body) plus another one on top (the cockpit), I used as reference 1 point perspective vanishing point (indicated as 1 V.P.) the horizontal lines are going to infinite therefore they are parallel to each others (indicated with the laying down 8 symbol). The ellipses in this perspective are quite compressed and the minor axes are always going to the vanishing point ( indicated as 1 V.P. and look at arrowed lines). Before passing to step 2 lets not forget to draw our center section very important for judging proportions (indicated as center line), last thing is the shadow of this shape indicated on the ground.
Now my advice is to make several trials following these simple rules, before passing to Step 2 .

Step 2 consists in modeling the geometrical shape we drew to obtain a car shape in top perspective. Following our center section and perspective lines we can draw sections to give a real car shape according to our taste, at the end we can add also reflextions lines on side body and glass areas and later we can apply with markers some shading.

Aston Martin V8 GT sketches by Adam Gompertz

Austria-based designer Adam Gompertz used all his experience of working at the MG Rover to create these outstanding sketches for a lightweight racing-derived version of the current Aston Martin V8 Vantage.
The reason I am showing you Adam's work is that it is really well done and easy to study in order to learn how he did it. On the top sketch you can see all construction lines used to build the sketch correctly. The side view is a good example of virtual media with a good use of the gray scale.

Car Design proportions study

Hi friends,

I found on the net an article that explaines really well how to control car design proportions on your sketches and projects. The quedstion is (for beginners) how do I start to control my car design proportions proposal?

The classic rule is "the wheel" and its size. Use the wheel to create the basic frame work into which you can start sketching your side outline proposal.

The images here published are a good example of what I am trying to explane, however I suggest you to click on "designcar" and discover the full article with excellent lesson and images on this topic.

Great rendering done by Huyndai designers!

Geneva Auto Show 2013 sketches

The Geneva Motor Show 2013 just opened and several new good looking cars and concept are present on the show stands, here I picked up some "concept sketches" just to demonstrate how good sketch work can really be translated in great 3D concept prototypes.
From top du bottom we have an interior pencil sketch by Citroen design studio for the Citroen Survolt Concept, Alfa Romeo Pandion exterior digital rendering by Bertone's design studio headed by Mike Robinson, at the end the color sketch (super well done) by Pininfarina design studio about the Alfa Romeo 2 ettottanta spider Concept.
I added the photo of this last project because we can admire the well balanced volume treatement very similar to the original sketch. This last example shows 1 thing: a good professional designer work and a good job in  translating it in a real model (good model makers).
